Those were both brilliant solutions, and really provided wonderful narrative possibilities. Ultimately the technology doesn’t make sense, and would have a *whole* bunch of unaddressed implications. But I think it’s a real mistake to hold SF to plausible/possible tech, at least if you want SF to tells compelling stories rather than just accurately predict the future.
