I don't drive, because I viscerally realised in my early 20s I can't really do it safely.

I don't think most people can drive safely consistently. Over time I have grown more and more convinced of this.
I think the stats agree with me.

So I have wanted cars to drive themselves. And it will happen eventually.

As the population ages this will only get worse. I saw some of my father's last months' driving and it's a miracle nobody got killed.

But now I just want a lot less cars.

Yeah, by all means those that can't be avoided must be electric and self-driving will have benefits, including safety eventually.

There's the fact that we are running out of time to decarbonise, and can't replace smoking cars with non-smoking EVs fast enough. We need to have fewer cars driving fewer Kms.

But it's more than that. Cars suck. Car-centric use of space sucks. Car-oriented lifestyles suck.
