First off, you'll want to ask and answer for yourself why you are getting into solo-mining. You have to be ok with the fact that you will likely never find a block.
If you are wanting to learn a bit about what mining is about, have a conversation starter to put on your desk, and have a miniscule chance that you might hit it big, but most likely just pay a few bucks a month for extra energy, then a Bitaxe is cool. I would argue you will learn more about mining by also pairing it up to your own node, running Datum, and mining on OCEAN, so you get small lightning payouts all the time, and you are using block templates generated using the mempool on your own Bitcoin node.
Not terribly familiar with FutureBit. Been happy with my little BitAxe and my S9 space heater, though.
