Today I happened to remember my middle school English teacher, in the 90s in a pretty conservative area of the US taking time out of her lesson to talk explicitly how she volunteered to help AIDS sufferers in the 80s, and offered to help us kids with anything they would be embarrassed to tell others about. It wasn't until was later I realized it was likely a dog whistle to try to nod at any gay kids that she was either closeted queer or a queer ally.
