you could try with mtr / tracepath, to see how far the pings get.
You could also try using nping (part of nmap) to send a large TCP packet on the SMTP packet.
(you could also do that with mtr, but then you have to be very careful not to send too many to quickly or you may trigger some rate limit on some firewall)
