connection kinda implies an interactive, mutual relationship but in social media, often it is one sided.
looking for someone to follow or trying to "get" followers feels disingenuous, almost antisocial but with the nature of online media it is the starting place for social interaction. sometimes it progresses to something more and then it can be called a connection. most of the time, it stays one sided.
calling it connecting right off the bat would cheapen the actual connection I think.
