Thing is, carriers as I understand them are surrounded by a flotilla of cruisers so that you have to get past a large number of guns to get a line on the big one.
Yeah, it had to happen in order for the rest to happen, but I can hand-wave "that's not a SCIF!" a lot easier than I can "how'd they get to the capital ship like that?"
