I think Bluesky turning off federation without giving us a return date could be significant. Gab turned off federation because it was using a lot of resources for them, with little reach. I wonder if Bluesky will arrive at the same decision.
It seems to me, that if a network isn't designed and implemented with federation as a core principle, it'll eventually just end up as a silo.
