Yay! I dared open the Lenovo X1 Carbon and replaced the battery. A bit more tricky than the chap in the video showed as a) I have a tremor in my hands and b) my battery had two patch wires running to the wireless chip, but I'm writing this on the device and the battery is charging.
I'll keep a close look for flames and my nose clean for smelling smoke, but so far: touch wood. Well, plastic.
