In my opinion it's better because it's more eyes looking at the code and there's no reason to doubt them.
The security flaws I believe were that the official app is old and outdated. Better apps exist. I use droid-ify. You can also add repos and fingerprint.
Obtainium pulls from whatever source you want, including apps inside your store if the links to the apks are provided, so it's whatever the dev published.
