Andrea Borden, Photographer on Nostr: Some people feel like flower arranging and floral photography is the most simple ...
Some people feel like flower arranging and floral photography is the most simple thing. What's hard about throwing some flowers in a vase for pictures?
Yesterday someone said to me, "Floral photographers fake so much of their work, using hidden wires, etc. I prefer this natural frayed look."
I find that similar to people (men, generally) saying "I prefer when women don't wear makeup, I prefer the natural look", while pointing at a picture of a woman with a "natural look" who is plainly wearing foundation, blush, eye makeup, and lipstick.
Even the "natural frayed look" takes work that is not immediate to the eye for casual viewers. Even 'wild and wiggly' requires mechanics (wires and pinfrogs) to make effortless looking. Some may call it 'faking'. It's really engineering on a small scale.
I took the flowers out of this vase 3 times to re-arrange. That's not uncommon when figuring out how certain stems will behave, and there's not a single vase arrangement I've done that doesn't require a mechanic or technique, all without plastics.
One of my most popular images took 2 arrangement tries, taking an hours-long break, and a final re-shaping.
'Natural' is sometimes hours trying to make goldenrod show on their 'right' side, or making the over-crowded pinfrog or chickenwire take just one more delicate stem without upsetting the balance.
There's a learning curve. Bear with me while I make things look 'natural'.
