I've noticed that pattern myself! And Mastodon, being a generally friendly place, will generally net you a follower count of 1/10 of the people you follow (if you do absolutely nothing else).
So, if you're a spammer, follow 7,500 people and you'll get 750 followers in a few days!
I wish it was easier to look at profiles without the boosts included. Often, if someone follows me, I really want to know if they're worth following back. And in this case, it could help identify trolls.
