Bf/gf can be a prelude to fiance or that kinda thing. But yeah. You're right. Technically in the West even "spouse" or equiv is statistically 50% likely to expire. Apparently we like our relationships like we like our Starbucks coffee cups, temporarily hot and wet, but soon empty and disposable.
On the other hand, although I'd prefer long term stability and loyalty, I'm all for relationship anarchy (ie. no labels required). That is right up until children are involved. At that stage the parent who tries to bail should be drawn and quartered and replaced with someone who has what it takes to provide a stable marriage and family.
