Released in 1997, MDK marked Shiny’s first PC release. Following Perry’s decision to never do a sequel again, the studio embarked on a project to create a 3D game. Nicky Bruty, exhausted with cartoony games, conceived a unique sci-fi world for the game. While the exact meaning of MDK remains uncertain, it is widely believed to be a reference to the phrase “Murder Death Kill.”

In MDK, you assume the role of Kurt, a humble janitor working for the eccentric Dr. Hawkins. Earth faces an invasion by a strip mining alien species that employs minecrawlers to excavate the planet’s surface. Dr. Hawkins equips you with his coil suit, and he thrusts you out of his satellite complex, relying on your courage to save the world from this alien threat.

MDK is a 3D run-and-gun platformer that introduced several groundbreaking features. It was one of the earliest third-person shooters. Additionally, MDK was one of the pioneers in incorporating a sniper scope, a feature that became increasingly popular in the FPS genre. The sniper scope plays a pivotal role in the game’s gameplay, allowing players to zoom in and shoot targets from distances not seen in a game before.
