Periodical cicadas have an evolutionary strategy of simply overwhelming everything. They stay underground for 17 years, then they all come out at the same time. It is overwhelmingly loud, they cover everything, and it is... a lot! They don't have any natural defenses, birds and other animals will just eat them up all day, but there's just so many it doesn't matter
