Things are about to get really bad here in the USA, especially for disabled people and minorities. We have a rare gift of time to prepare for the coming authoritarian regime, and many voices are encouraging us to get ready for dark times. After living through the last Trump regime, we have an idea of how dark things will get, and how our support systems will fall apart, or worse, will be turned against us.
Most of the advice I see says the best thing we can do is strengthen community connections and build our own support networks and systems, to replace what will be taken from us. Sure, that makes sense. But I worry a lot that we #autistic folk will miss out on these support networks. When people are building community, it's very common for autistic people to be ignored, forgotten, or even intentionally excluded. Allistic people don't easily trust us, and trust is crucial if we're going to have to rely on each other. And so we often get left out.
I really want to know what I'm supposed to do here. I've been isolated and cut off from all community for years, and I don't see that getting better anytime soon. It would be nice to think that someone would remember to reach out and include me in local support networks, but I can't imagine that actually happening. So I expect I will have to endure the full force of the coming onslaught entirely on my own, and I'm very much freaking out about it.
I assume I'm not the only autistic person in this situation. What the fuck are we supposed to do?
