Just finished reading the Almanack of Naval Ravikant
Here is a quick review:
I have had great friends, including @RealBobbyB, telling me for years that this was a great book and to be honest, I didn't pick it up because I thought it was about lessons learned from Naval history 🤣 . But its nothing close
In a tiny nutshell I would say that there are very few (maybe none) original ideas in this book. But don't let that dissuade you.
Naval has a knack for taking a lot of BIG IDEAS that you hear floating around (everything from yoga to wealth to health to happiness to education to thinking about the future to leveraging technology to paying employees and a half dozen other things), condensing them into their essential parts, and then making rules for himself (and you if you wish) to live by.
*Spoiler warning* But come on its a self help book...
Here are a few snippets (all of them paraphrased in my own understanding of the concepts) :
On employees: Principal/Agent Problem. If you want something done right, do it yourself. If you don't care, send someone. The reason it will get done it you do it is because you are a principal. The smaller a company or organization is OR the better they tie a person's work to their pay and treat them right, the more the employee feels like they have an impact and are being justly compensated. In the end they;ll do a better job. An agent is someone who represents a company or person but frankly doesn't care the outcome of their work as long as they are paid.
"A desire is a contract you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want."
Get rid of the word "Should". Every time that you are using the word "Should" you are either talking about something that is a social programming construct OR you are talking about something that you have, for some reason, been putting off. In both cases whatever you are saying you "should" do is highly suspect.
"Happiness is skill" Any time things go wrong or you are disappointed immediately and ALWAYS try to think of an up-side even if its 'well, I guess I get to learn from the universe now'
For old problems look for old answers. For new problems look for new answers I.E. If its a car traffic issue, it is a new problem. If it's a diet issue it's an old problem.
There is no such a thing as Legacy. You will die. Your children will die. Your works, in time, will turn to dust. The universe has been around for 10 Billion years and will continue for longer. The time you spend here is a firefly in the night. Every time that you are unhappy... You are wasting it.
You'll never be good at being someone else. To make an original contribution you have to be irrationally obsessed with something. When you are irrationally obsessed with something you become the leader or one of the leaders of that niche of humanity. But you'll never be irrationally obsessed without being irrationally yourself.
All in all, though I got very few "AH HAH!" moments I think I will definitely come back to in this book. It has a lot of condensed wisdom that is definitely worth a read and a recommend.
I hope this little #bookreview saves you some time and/or sparks your interest. I tend to go through quite a few books and I figured I might as well share what I know. So I intend to review here the books that I read moving forward (and probably some that have had a profound impact on my life moving back)
