The voltage across a capacitor lags the current by a quarter period. The voltage across a resistor is in phase with the current. If we map the inductive reactance and capacitive reactance onto the positive and negative imaginary axes and the voltage across the resistor onto the positive real axis, they have the correct relationships if a single period of oscillation corresponds to 2 Pi.
