Media companies got burned by teaming up with walled gardens like Facebook. Now they're jumping on board for Flipboard's Mastodon server.

Mastodon may run on an open protocol, but how is joining Flipboard's server any different than any working with another news aggregator? Shouldn't these publications be spinning up their own servers instead? 🤔
