2/ The star, WOH G64, is a red supergiant. It is enshrouded in an elongated cocoon of dust that shines brightly at infrared wavelengths –– that's the bright inner oval you see at the centre of the image.
The image was obtained with ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The VLTI combines light captured with several telescopes, resolving details similar to those you would see with a huge telescope as large as the separation between them.
