Imo Coinbase is safe, probably the safest exchange, but you should do your work and play around with different setups to be comfortable with self custody in cold storage. Self custody has some risks like loss of funds so I don't blame people who prefer having coins in CB. Bitkey seems a really good option for people who want to self custody.
