I heard about one such teacher who would gather large audiences and one by one, students will approach him and be given a spiritual name. The attendee described the other students as excitedly pulling out their phones to change their Facebook names to their new spiritual names. The delusion at work here could not be more apparent.

Spiritual names are meaningless and only serve to bind naïve seekers to spiritual authority.

The most important part of my spiritual name is "The Meaningless." They are essentially nonsense, but no more than anything else. No one is more qualified to give you a spiritual name than you are, if you want one.
