An US lawyer wrote an opinion piece about the upcoming #Ukraine ban on "Ukraine Orthodox Church",quoting many principled values like freedom of religion, "the right to think and to believe" and other nice words. This part is probably the most entertaining for anyone who followed the whole saga:
> Despite its historic ties to Russian Orthodoxy, the UOC has stood firmly in support of Ukraine’s rightful self-defense against Russia’s aggression.Â
The problem is that this statement is 90% wrong. The full name of UOC was always 'Ukraine Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)"... and they meant it. For decades the UOC (MP) has been following Moscow's foreign policy, starting from Holodomor denial long before any armed conflicts started. The 2014 war in Donbas saw UOC priests bless the "separatists" (Russian GRU). The 2022 invasion saw — yes, a formal but lukewarm condemnation from Onufryi — but then OUC priests again supporting Moscow spiritually (dedicating masses to Russian victory) and very much physically (correcting Russian artillery). This ended with a long series of arrests of OUC priests by SBU in 2023, who before that was apparently very reserved in order to avoid religious frictions.
If you're interested in details, Ukrainian Wikipedia has a long list of these, which could be read by anyone interested. This way you may acquire unique knowledge clearly missed by the US lawyer so outspoken about "religious freedoms in Ukraine"...
