Exactly how plants detect water and direct root growth towards the water (hydrotropism) is still surprisingly elusive. Why not 'hearing'!

If you are interested this paper gives a nice history and overview of how the ideas about this developed and moves into the current ideas, which is heavier going.

Its link with gravitropism reminded me of experiments I got involved with that needed a zero gravity system in a growth room.
