npub1zdp33shl69xr0uq3x8n5gsjykq9upycwh6nqm02c3f6x0frrn0dq42vqv8 (npub1zdp…vqv8) Social media live and die in cycles--I don't even think it's *just* commercially motivated enshittification; any medium that becomes popular eventually gets gamed by bad actors and annoyances to the point that bad content drives out good.

And if it doesn't get popular, there's the opposite death spiral where people expect more activity than they see so they assume nobody is there and they decamp. Nothing is actually sustainable as a really thriving community for more than a decade or so and it's usually less. But people just keep moving.

So I jumped from Usenet to various blogs and boards to LiveJournal to Google+ to Facebook/Twitter to here. Never really *liked* Facebook or Twitter; I still have a Facebook presence but whenever I do anything that's not friends-only or on a pretty niche group, I regret it immediately.

Going viral on Mastodon is always smaller but feels bigger than on Twitter, because the interaction is more real and human. You don't get the sense that an algorithm is pumping you for a stupid or venal reason.
