I love the ability to move to another instance while still retaining much of my account stuff. In the bad old days, most forum owners were cis white guys with mountains of privilege. They ruled their online "kingdoms" like they were feudal tyrants, and a lot of the decision-making was almost comically callous and harmful against minority groups.

The fediverse obviously isn't immune to issues like that, but it's nice to be able to leave a toxic place and still keep touch with those that I meet.
