The crust of ice on top of the snow did start causing problems for her paw pads. I ordered mushing boots (proper ones, like used in Iditarod - they are cheap and you purchase individually for each paw so they are sized correctly) but of course that didn't solve our problem currently.

Thus, my makeshift solution. My old socks, spun off on the top edge, held with a rubber band. She didn't mind one bit. They didn't help with water ingress but they did provide an ice barrier for her delicate toebeans.
