Their whole schtick is that they don't try to orient the kids towards a specific kind of knowledge or skill, and as a result kids do not ever properly learn to read or write, because a kid is not sufficiently interested in letters to become proficient in it.

I think there's a middle ground to be aimed at, with some structured teachings without having to institutionalize them.
