A request is more intimate and personal, implying that it might be granted based on the requestee's relationship with the requester. An ask is an institutional thing, delivered with a faceless expectation that it will be accomplished because of the corporate interrelationship between the asker and the asked. I have a request, and if you grant it that's a favor. My team has some asks, and when they are delivered, that will simply be the ordinary course of business.

This isn't all that goes into these words; I'm just trying to highlight where I think they've split.
