2015 years ago today the battle of the Teutoburger forest ended with the complete annihilation of three Roman legions (one sixth of the entire Roman military) by Germanic tribes.
Funnily enough the battle is mostly named after Varus, the loser, not Hermann, the victor.
That defeat was so painful for the empire that it ended its expansion to the north-east of the known world once and for all.
