Robert Caro's masterpiece "The Power Broker" was published 50 years ago this year, and so is getting a fair bit of attention. It's a sprawling history of modern New York, framed as a biography of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses.

I happened by it by chance in college and was hooked by the first few pages. It's a big book, but on finishing it, I regretted that it wasn't longer. Explains so much about why things are the way they are.
