I suspect the cost of hosting a #fediverse server using Mastodon could be much lower. Let me explain. If I'm wrong on any the raw facts here, please correct me (with links) so I can school myself.

By fediverse standards, generous sums of money are gven in regular donations to Mastodon gGmbH for software development. But unless they're specifically tagged for that, Gargron can also use that money as needed for mastodon.social and any other Mastodon instances he runs.
