Even if the project is dead, if you have a useful patch, please submit it to their patch tracker (pull requests, etc.) Even if you're pretty convinced that it has zero chance of being merged there, submit it. It can help others who hit the issue. It can be reused if the project is forked (or revived).
I'm looking at all the #Python packages that were abandoned upstream, yet are still used by other projects, and every distribution needs to patch them to keep things working.
