"I’ve realized this on a much more personal scale. I’m the father of a precocious daughter, and I’ve always tried to expose her to more helpful and inspirational models of personal growth and leadership when I’ve had the option. Years ago, she watched the animated _Mulan_, and loved it. More recently, she watched the live-action remake and detested it. Her primary complaint? The animated Mulan started the story as an intelligent and creative young woman who had no relevant experience or training, and so failed in martial pursuits. With time, she sought these out, and came to excel. The live-action Mulan, on the other hand, appears to have been born a natural badass who excelled at pursuits in which she’d never trained. Instead of providing a useful inspiration (like the original), my daughter found the live-action version to be completely unrelatable. She asked out loud whether the creators had ever met a young girl, because (in her words), “no one is born just being good at everything”. I couldn’t have put it better myself. Thank goodness she’s never been hooked on films or television, as it’s become harder to find relatable, inspiring examples."
It is definitely difficult.
