It's about the right timescale.
My sister was ten years older than me, and I pretty much thought everything her cohort had done was lame, and since then I've observed that 10 years seems to be about the timescale for stuff to become passe.
(Sometimes it's as short as 5 years. When I was a young lecturer I remember coming across a group of our postgrads sitting around having a fag break and commisserating with each other.
"No one says 'cool' any more."
"No. Now they say 'sweet'. And you have to get the tone of voice just right..." [Attempts to draw out the syllable while getting the right sort of almost Chinese turning tone.]
"And the hand gesture that goes with it" [makes kind of horizontal chopping motion...])
