In the winter of 1891, a college gym teacher was looking for a creative indoor sport that would be easy to learn and keep his students fit. The young men had grown tired of marching, calisthenics and gymnastics, so on Dec. 21, James Naismith introduced “basket ball,” a humble game played with peach baskets and soccer balls that would become one of the world’s most popular sports.
