that would decouple the actual list from notifications about the list
which seems fine to me

though there are more problems with the current follows system, namely that the following lists get too big in some cases
i wonder if the follow-events themselves could somehow be used to constitute this following list, as well as function as notification
eg when i follow a person, it creates a follow-event, when i unfollow them this event is deleted
but maybe this results in too many events...i dunno
