I’m not sure that we’re disagreeing, actually. Let’s go back a step and see if we can get on the same page.
The saying I adapted was: “war is the continuation of politics by other means”. In other words, war and politics seek the same goals, but achieve them somewhat differently.
So, to use your example, a political assassination is just another type of assassination. The shared goal is in eliminating that politician, whether by making them disgraced or dead.
The two means can overlap. Trump’s stochastic terrorism, calling for someone, anyone to bring him the head of Anthony Fauci or Mark Milley, turns politics into a call for violence.
So maybe what you’re saying is that we’re in this period of overlap, where politics such as the 2020 election seamlessly turn into civil war on 1/6.
