Zen may not emphasize the sutras but it's very much within the Mahayana tradition. The reality of living Buddhas is inherent the theory of Zen transmission. The Zen sutras still contain the bodhisattva path, explicitly, and part of that tradition is that everyone is a Buddha that has deluded himself through greed and is thus suffers due to the emanation of the Buddha Nature through him having been corrupted.
