Mine was very much 'spare the rod and spoil the child'. Or perhaps they were just particularly bad tempered.
I can remember initially thinking "Well, it never did me any harm" which was nonsense. Something I told myself to self-soothe? Eventually turned it round to "Did it do me any good?" And of course, it didn't...
