I had really supportive parents, and I still ended up with lots of self esteem problems, largely because no matter what my _parents_ did in terms of encouraging me, my peers as a kid tended to tease me and leave me out of things.

I think society in a general sense doesn't always treat people as if they're worthwhile by default.

If the current right-wing political movement keeps gaining ground, that's going to get a lot worse, I fear.
