The reason efficiency/frugality arguments don't work on people who routinely use them to justify cruel public policy is because *the cruelty is the point*, not the efficiency or cheapness. That's just their *excuse*.

That it's legitimately and provably cheaper to just house people for free is irrelevant. That compulsive masking and testing in healthcare would save them money doesn't matter.

When we make efficiency/frugality arguments we're accepting their bad faith framework.
