YouTube embeds are expensive – there’s well over 1 MB transferred for an embed that just sits in the page and may never be played.
Of that, on a large screen, maybe about 200 KB could be for the ‘thumbnail’ image, because the image is often way bigger than is needed for its display size. And since the video freeze frame can often be a bit blurry that’s a lot of data to show a fairly shitty image.
So I’ve been looking at ways to produce something visually representative but way lower footprint…
