Originally a landscape painter of Canada, he departed from direct representation and also stopped signing, naming, and dating his work, in order not to influence viewers' encounter with what he believed was essentially a spiritual experience. His late work becomes more and more involved with the purely spiritual, #Painting as a vessel of the Divine in nature. He was a Theosophist and parallels to the more famous O'Keefe, both on and off canvas, are evident.
