This is great. Genre expectations are absolutely a way stories talk to each other. And the twisting of them that can happen--well, it can only happen because they exist in the first place.
Every once in a while I encounter a writer who is subverting genre expectations in really great ways but doesn't want to credit them as part of what makes their story interesting. Which doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe it's an argument--even a heated one--but it's still a conversation.
