Finally got some coffee... so, last night's big gathering... where to start...
Spent that morning getting cleaned up and dressed, left home right around when the sun started setting, arrived right as it got dark out... rather sizeable number of guests this year, and they all arrived at around the same time, so there was quite a crowd outside her house (girlfriend's extended family - she's kept contact with a significant number of them over the years and even lived abroad with one).
Dinner table was loaded - at least ten different types of chicken dinners on one side, and the most unsettlingly large heap of mac 'n cheese I've ever seen in my life on the other (enough macaroni to kill a man if he ever tried to eat it all on his own). Guests were very chatty... kind of - none of them ever really had anything to say to me, and I wasn't about to inject myself into their conversations, so I just sort of tuned everyone else out and ate dinner.
Girlfriend's older sister invited her boyfriend (who arrived a bit late)... interesting fellow with a thing for casino games. Guy wanted to play a round of Blackjack and even made a bet - I walked with about half his paycheck and a lightly-bruised shoulder from where he lost his shit and punched me because he was just SO certain I cheated (he can bitch and moan about card counting all he wants - fucker can't prove I did a GODDAMN thing).
My girlfriend and I made it a point that, on every one of these solstice gatherings, we'd go up to the roof and slow-dance under the night sky... unfortunately, it was too cold, and the sky was clouded over, so that didn't happen this year. We ended up heading down to the mini rec room she set up in the basement (nobody else seemed interested, so we had the place to ourselves) - arcade cabinet in the corner, pool table near the center, three different consoles hooked to a TV in another corner (the couch made things a bit cramped, though). Played around with all that for a few hours.
Went back upstairs to have dessert, met her distant cousin from Greenland (fucking hell, she's tall... I still can't get over that), and ended up eating a homemade wintergreen mint ice cream that didn't play nice with my stomach (but the fresh breath was nice while it lasted). Managed to survive the rest of the party despite all that... finally took my leave after everyone else left (and took a container of chicken and mac home with me - that's gonna be tonight's dinner).
Got home at around 10:30(-ish?) PM (maybe 11, I don't remember). Logged on to all my socials, but didn't really have the energy to bother with writing any posts at the time, so I just silently checked in and snoozed for the rest of the night... good times. They're doing this solstice party all month long, so I might go back another day (probably not on Christmas... maybe the day after, we'll see).
That just about sums up yesterday - I feel like more might have happened, but my memory ain't havin' it right now. Anyway, back to my coffee.
