I'd imagine that the 3rd graders have a math textbook. Somewhere in there, it has to show that one cannot divide by 0 or put 0 in the denominator of a fraction.

That said, two of the best answers in that reddit thread involved teaching your child that people in authority can be wrong, and people need to learn to deal with that.
