Why 'Donnie Darko' Is One Of The All Time Greats..

A film that manipulates the mind and the idea of what a story through film can portray all while making as many symbolic and metaphorical points towards society as can possibly fit. Let me explain why there's no film like Donnie Darko.

Based in 1988, the film follows a troubled high school student and his battle with hallucinations as he comes off his medication. As the hallucinations become more intense, the battle between who Donnie Darko is and where his Alter "Frank" begins increasing, and what those actions mean for the life and psyche of Donnie become more and more impactful.

Every-time I do pieces on films like these it's so hard not to give away too much of the story for those of you that haven't seen it yet. It's an impossible balance of trying to add context while not ruining the story so I apologize for any holes.

Overall though, the film is covering a multitude of issues such as Donnie Darko's problem with his own psyche, teaching us that even if it turns out life has no one meaning, we can still care for each other and make our own meaning while we're alive. While he may be a nihilist, a hedonist, and an existential teenager, Donnie cares deeply for those around him and will do anything to protect them.

The amount of foreshadowing done in this film is enough to make you watch it twice just for that fact alone. The amount of pieces that seem to have so little significance in the moment coming to be the signs of exactly what was to come is one of the reasons this film is so good to me and goes in the category of one of the best cult classic films of all time.
