Atg least on Android (maybe on iPhone it goes through Apple's servers instead?), unless you're using a VPN, your podcast app exposes your IP address to the servers it downloads podcasts from. Some of the podcast hosting sites provide podcasters with this service: they do real-time GeoIP lookup on the address of the person doing the download, and then insert geographically customized ads into the downloaded podcast file in real-time.
It is, I agree, alarming.
