While we are collectively crossing the fingers for hard caps (good luck bringing Chinese and Russians on the same table), we could use non-magic bullet tech to continue doing useful science. Complex image processing (and stacking) could mitigate some of the problems. In any case, I do not believe that there will be another major Earth-based telescope after ELT. Last year I was at SAO in Munich to see how it progresses, and the price is really cosmic!
